Keychain Prayer Activity
What for?
To remember God as you travel to and from home, work, school, and beyond!
What will you need?
The type of keychain you choose to make will determine which materials you will need. See the links below to find a list of supplies and instructions.
How do you do it?
Find a keychain model that you would like to make, and collect all the materials you need. There are many types of keychains that can be made. If you can sew, here is a sewing option embroidered key fob (advanced, pictured above). Another option is this paracord snake knot cross keychain. Finally, you can always make a simple gimp fish and add a keychain.
Before you make the keychain, be at a place where you cannot be disturbed. Turn your phone on silent, close your door, etc. to make sure the time you are spending is completely devoted to time spent with God.
Say a prayer that invites God’s Spirit to be with you as you create your keychain, and to let God know what your hopes are of the keychain.
Go ahead and follow the steps for the keychain you want to create. Think about the importance it is to know that God is always present, especially when you drive places. Imagine that God is sitting with you. What do you think God might say to you? What kind of blessing is God giving you?
Say a final prayer over the keychain, thanking God for the time, and to ask God to bless your driving efforts.
More about the Keychain Prayer Activity…
Like many prayer activities, making this prayer keychain is an intentional time that you set aside to make something while being prayerful and mindful of God. Not only is the creation of a keychain a place of prayer, but this activity provides you or a friend something tangible to see every time you use your keys, and reminds you to pray every time you take a trip. Whether you’re going to work, on a short trip to the corner store to grab some bread, or heading out for a road trip, the reminder for prayer is always helpful.
At my church, I noticed that it is really important to make the big moments in a teens life a part of the community in the youth group. As a result, our youth group has rituals. For example, when someone graduates High School, youth sign a wooden cross that hangs in my office. I knew something needed to be done for the youth who receive their drivers permit, since that is such an exciting time! I decided to make these prayer keychains, and award them to the teens who received their drivers permit. I did not make these keychains, but I asked someone in the church who had the sewing gifts necessary to do it. She was glad to help! I wanted their names on one side, and the name of our church on the back. It helped me send youth a message that the church is part of their identity. This gift recognizes their accomplishments, offers continued faith/prayer formation, and acknowledges the many adventures they will be on with God.
I hope this prayer activity encourages you to recognize that God cares about your safety, the safety of others, and that God wants to guide you as you find new responsibilities on the road. Congratulations, and enjoy the prayerful time that you spend making a keychain.
