Examen Prayer Activity

Examen Prayer Activity

What for?

The Prayer of Examen is a way to look at our lives as a site of God’s grace. By examining the day each evening we can train our hearts and minds to look for Christ outside regular church times.

What do I need?

A quiet place to rest and be in prayer.

How do I do it?

  1. Read aloud a short verse of scripture to enter into an attitude and posture of prayer. For example: “Search me, O God, and Know my heart; test me and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting” (Ps 139:23-24).

  2. Thank God for the gift of another day by recalling the events of the day from its beginning to now.

  3. Ask yourself where you notice God during the day’s activities. Also ask God to reveal the places of grace you may have overlooked.

  4. Pray for the day to come by asking God to be present in all its tasks and events. Close with a regular prayer such as the Lord’s prayer or Song of Simeon (Luke 2:29-32).
